A CHESTERTON ADVENT: BORN AMONG MIRACLES TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO

The solution to the world’s problems in a smelly manger confounds the common sense of science.

Thursday, December 22, 2022

We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are honourable, but we without honour.

1 Corinthians 4:10

We are only a few days away from the end of our Advent journey! The moment we have been so looking forward to recreating and celebrating will have arrived – the Nativity of our Lord and Savior!

During this Advent, more than any others we living now have known, the world, in love with darkness (John 3:19) and worshipful of science has moved farther away from the solution to all of our fundamental problems – a King for all mankind, for every tribe, nation and tongue who possesses the power over life and death, over our real and common enemy and over the fallen human heart. But power exercised in perfect love.

For every violent taking of spoils, with tumult, and garment mingled with blood, shall be burnt, and be fuel for the fire. For a CHILD IS BORN to us, and a son is given to us, and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace. His empire shall be multiplied, and there shall be no end of peace: he shall sit upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom; to establish it and strengthen it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth and for ever: the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah 9:5-7

Instead, it has scorned the true answer and praised itself and its own hideous “wisdom” – the worship of science as the “deposit of truth”. In the name of such, many horrible experiments have been performed on the human race and many more will be performed – all in the name of “Progress”. Each day brings more articles and news stories of where these are taking us – even to the point of eschewing the idea of human birth. A recent news story carried across several agencies speaks of science creating an “artificial womb facility” that is scheduled to grow 30,000 babies per year. Each horrific accomplishment that seeks to replace the human creation and deconstruct God’s constructs is praised.

How long God will allow the enemy to instigate this darkness to mislead many, none of us knows. But as the world rejects God and the miracle of Christmas He has given to us, if we, like the angels, receiving nothing personal from it, but as it were, continue to stand looking on with hearts swelling, learn to sing together in what Chesterton calls “the primeval duty of Praise” we will know then that we are at last what God meant for us to be – Sons of God. Then, in this Advent, as born again, like the Shepherds in the field, we can sing along with the Angels:

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!”

Luke 2:14

We do this amidst scoffing and ridicule and it does not diminish the thrill in our hearts! God created a universe and He has created a way for all men in that universe to be redeemed! Something science will never be able to accomplish no matter how far it is allowed to progress. And as a dying world watches, it is confounded by the mere servants of God – you and me – who continue to tell them why even as they celebrate Christmas.

“Christmas is an obstacle to modern progress. Rooted in the past, and even the remote past, it cannot assist a world in which the ignorance of history is the only clear evidence of the knowledge of science. Born among miracles reported from two thousand years ago, it cannot expect to impress that sturdy common sense which can withstand the plainest and most palpable evidence for miracles happening at this moment. . . .Christmas is not modern; Christmas is not Marxian; Christmas is not made on the pattern of that great age of the Machine, which promises to the masses an epoch of even greater happiness and prosperity than that to which it has brought the masses at this moment. Christmas is medieval; having arisen in the earlier days of the Roman Empire. Christmas is a superstition. Christmas is a survival of the past.” – G.K. Chesterton, George Marlin – Chesterton On Christmas, The Catholic Thing, 2009

Our Advent Prayer

Blessed are you, Lord God:
Blessed are you for ever.
Holy is your name:
Blessed are you for ever.
Great is your mercy for your people:
Blessed are you for ever. Amen!

Beloved, praise Him in everything He has made. It is all a miracle leading to the miracle of all miracles!
