God can and will make us new
And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new. Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true. (Revelation 21:5)
New Year’s Resolutions invariably wind up as a list of material things people want to do or change. But since the point is to make a new you, then repentance should be at the top of the list and throughout. What do you and I need to repent of? What does that list look like? Go to 1 Corinthians 6: 9-10 as a check off “don’t” list. Then look for the “do” scriptures. There is an interesting part of worship at the beginning of Mass called the “Penitential Act” and in it it the people repeat: “I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do“
So there we have what our New Year’s Resolutions should look like: what I have done and should correct and what I should have done and need to do.
Let’s start off 2021 by doing or stopping what we ought! Let’s do it for God whom we love. And He will make us new!
“The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective.” – G. K. Chesterton, Daily News
