everyone must choose his side

The Decision Between Light And Darkness

“If I say, “Let only darkness cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
even the darkness is not dark to thee,
the night is bright as the day;
for darkness is as light with thee.” (Psalm 139:12

“The issue is now quite clear. It is between light and darkness and every one must choose his side.” – G.K. Chesterton

Chesterton’s quote is the very point of John 3:19. It is the verdict rendered for all time, for all, angels and mankind. God has already decided. Light and dark. Right and wrong. Good and evil. Social justice is man making himself God and deciding. Justice is God deciding.

Some say it is wrong to take sides but the Holy Scripture is telling us the opposite. All of our existence comes down to it. There are numerous scriptures about taking sides, and how God himself does and we must. Dating back to Moses putting the choice between the malediction and the blessing. And he asks: “who is on God’s side? To me!” (Exodus 32:26) And that sets the whole tone ever there after for the Christian. We are all given that choice: Light or Darkness. And we must choose a side.

Even Chesterton, (as we posted above) in the days before his death, as he drifted in and out of consciousness, would become lucid for a moment and say that all of life came down to that choice: light and darkness. And so it also says in Psalm 118:6 and Romans 8:31.

In Miller’s famous play, The Crucible, Judge Danforth puts it starkly (although he means it for a different purpose, the point he makes is true) :
“You must understand, sir, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road between. This is a sharp time, now, a precise time—we live no longer in the dusky afternoon when evil mixed itself with good and befuddled the world. Now, by God’s grace, the shining sun is up, and them that fear not light will surely praise it.”

Let us prayerfully contemplate in this Advent season what has been turned to appear as “light” in our world, much like its god of this system of things (2 Cor 4:4), and turn from this deception of what is really darkness to the real Light of the World – Christ.
