Frances Chesterton, wife of G. K. Chesterton, was born on June 28, 1869. She married G. K. Chesterton on the same date,.June 28, in 1901. Theirs was a happy and faithful marriage of two “incompatible” people: a man and a woman. As G. K. Chesterton was later to observe in his defense of marriage:
“If Americans can be divorced for ‘incompatibility of temper’, I cannot conceive why they are not all divorced. I have known many happy marriages, but never a compatible one. The whole aim of marriage is to fight through and survive the instant when incompatibility becomes unquestionable. For a man and a woman, as such, are incompatible.”
He was also to defend marriage as a point of honor:
“Marriage is a duel to the death which no man of honour should refuse.”
