Frances Chesterton’s Birthday and The Wedding Anniversary of Gilbert and Frances Chesterton

HBHAFrancesFrances Chesterton, wife of G. K. Chesterton, was born on June 28,  1869.  She married G. K. Chesterton on the same date,.June 28, in 1901.  Theirs was a happy and faithful marriage of two “incompatible” people: a man and a woman.  As G. K. Chesterton was later to observe in his defense of marriage:

“If Americans can be divorced for ‘incompatibility of temper’, I cannot conceive why they are not all divorced.  I have known many happy marriages, but never a compatible one.  The whole aim of marriage is to fight through and survive the instant when incompatibility becomes unquestionable.  For a man and a woman, as such, are incompatible.”

He was also to defend marriage as a point of honor:

“Marriage is a duel to the death which no man of honour should refuse.”

He later wrote an entire pamphlet in defense of marriage and against divorce entitled The Superstition of Divorce which he hoped would not be needed in the future.  Sadly, it is still very much needed as it contains incredible wisdom about why marriage is sacred. He predicted through this piece the very problems we face today as a result of not honoring our vows.  He and Frances lived what they preached and his last words were of his love for his wife, Frances.
