Free To Serve, Not To Act On Every Feeling Or Impulse

"Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it."
— John Adams

What must he think now when every sort of debauched kind of living passes for a "human right"?  To give an indication of Adam's intent on "making good use of our freedom" we have his life of well-known integrity, his faith in God and the scriptures, his faithfulness in marriage to one woman, his beloved Abigail, and one of the sorrows of his life, the disowning of his dissolute son who refused to repent.  Adams was not a cold man but he was one of conviction…even when it broke his heart to take that stand.  He was a man who understood that men needed restraint from their fallen passions.  And that real freedom required some conditions to ensure it would not be abused.
